Description of Timber Natural Draft Cooling Tower

The traditional natural draft cooling towers made of FRP or timber, commonly known as fanless or fill-less cooling towers, do not require the use of fans or fills to cool the water. In the case of timber atmospheric/fanless cooling towers, treated wooden louvers are utilized as side walls to prevent water spillage and allow for the passage of outside wind, which serves as the cooling medium.

In fanless cooling towers, hot water is sprayed at the top with spray nozzles, forming small droplets that are cooled by the atmospheric wind flow. This same technique is applied in FRP fanless/natural draft/fill-less cooling towers, using FRP louvers instead of expensive timber ones. These cooling towers are highly cost-effective, as they do not require a fan or electric motor, resulting in minimal operating and maintenance expenses.

Moreover, they are highly energy-efficient and offer the best payback when compared to other cooling tower models. Additionally, they operate quietly, making them an ideal choice for noise-sensitive environments.

Timber Natural Draft Cooling Tower Construction

The Timber Cooling Towers are designed with unique features like Seagull Bars made of PVC or Steel, ‘C’ type Drift Eliminators, Aerodynamic FRP Fans, and Drives with or without Gear Boxes, to ensure maximum thermal efficiency. The use of Seagull Bars in the tower design allows for both film and splash cooling, resulting in 20-25% more capacity than conventional fill designs.

Structure: The tower structure is made of selected quality Pine Wood treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate (ASCU Chemicals) as per IS 401.

Water Distribution: Open gravity type basins made of tongue and grooved treated timber planks or marine plywood fitted with polypropylene spiral target nozzles provide uniform hot water distribution over the entire fill area.

Fill: ASCU treated timber splash bars are supported on GRP grids.

Drift Eliminator: Made of treated timber planks supported on grooved treated plywood Eliminator frame in a herringbone pattern.

Casings and Louvers: Corrugated Asbestos Cement-Board or Corrugated FRP sheet is used for casings and louvers in special applications.

Hardware: Structural connections are made with Hot Dipped Galvanized bolts, and nails are of stainless steel (304 quality) and screw shank type S.S.304/316 quality.

Fan: Propeller Type multi-bladed fan assembly with blades made of cast Aluminium alloy and hub of cast iron. The fan is directly coupled with the motor.

Fan Cylinder: The cylinder is made of HDG Steel/FRP coated and fitted with hot dipped galvanized steel fan guard.

Motor: The tower comes equipped with a New India or equivalent makes 415V/3PH/50Hz TEFC Weatherproof IP-54 enclosure motor. The Class-B insulation Flange mounted vertical motor has an extended shaft specially made for Cooling Tower Applications.

Timber Natural Draft Cooling Tower Working

The timber natural draft towers operate based on the principle of natural draft, which uses the difference in temperature and density of air to create an air flow. The tower is made of treated pine wood and has an open gravity type basin fitted with polypropylene spiral target nozzles for uniform hot water distribution over the fill area.

The hot water is sprayed over the ASCU treated timber splash bars supported on GRP grids. As the water falls through the fill, it comes into contact with the air flow created by the aerodynamic FRP fan, which draws air into the tower from the bottom and exhausts it through the top. The use of seagull bars either in PVC or steel and ‘C’ type drift eliminators ensures film and splash cooling, which gives more capacity by 20-25% over the conventional fill design.

The tower’s casings and louvers are made of corrugated asbestos cement-board or corrugated FRP sheet on special applications, while structural connections are made with hot dipped galvanized bolts, and nails are of stainless steel (304 quality), screw shank type S.S.304/316-quality. The fan cylinder is made of HDG steel/FRP coated cylinder fitted with a hot-dipped galvanized steel fan guard, and the motor is a flange-mounted vertical motor with an extended shaft specially made for cooling tower applications.
